Il workshop è strutturato per conoscere strumenti avanzati del design computazionale attraverso il linguaggio di programmazione VB_Rhinoscript per Rhinoceros (uno dei più diffusi modellatori NURBS per l‘architettura e il design utilizzato dalla maggior parte degli studi internazionali di architettura). Il workshop illustrerà agli studenti le potenzialità del linguaggio RHINOSCRIPT per automatizzare azioni complesse e generare sistemi ricorsivi, analizzare geometrie estrapolando dati e schemi per la fabbricazione digitale. Lo scopo del workshop è raggiungere un livello di conoscenza del linguaggio Rhinoscript per poter scrivere il codice che crea una pannellizazione controllata di una superficie NURBS (skin dell’edificio) tramite attrattori e il successivo sviluppo su piano dei pannelli numerati della facciata. Nella prima giornata del workshop lo studente imparerà a leggere un codice e a riprodurre semplici task. La docenza proporrà dei pattern specifici che dovranno essere riprodotti dagli studenti durante la seconda giornata del workshop che serviranno per capire come tradurre una strategia geometrica in una logica di programmazione.

Il workshop è pensato all’introduzione del design computazionale attraverso l’utilizzo del plug-in Grasshopper per Rhinoceros (uno dei più diffusi modellatori NURBS per l‘architettura e il design utilizzato dalla maggior parte degli studi internazionali di architettura).Il tema del workshop è lo studio di una facciata (skin) intelligente che reagisce a stimoli esterni e a condizioni variabili, scomponibile in pannelli numerati e sviluppabili su piani. Attraverso una serie di esercizi di base lo studente imparerà come è strutturato il programma, l’interfaccia e la logica del visual script sviluppando i primi modelli parametrici già nella prima giornata del workshop. Nella seconda giornata lo studente lavorerà ad un modello parametrico di una facciata di un edificio tipo, scegliendo un pattern tra quelli mostrati dalla docenza e assocerà i pannelli della facciata ad attrattori multipli/mappe di colore/dati esterni per un controllo dinamico del design dellla facciata e produrrà uno sviluppo completo dei pannelli per la numerazione e la colorazione differenziata.

With this definition we can plot all kinds of patterns formed by planar closed curves on a surface with double curvature achieving this effect of skin with variable apertures depending on their distance to one or more points attractors. The script works optimizing meshes to obtain a smooth skin using weaverbird component.

This RhinoScript is a recursive code that draws a mesh panel with four vertices ( u0, v0 -- u1, v0 -- u1, v1 --u0, v1) tracks and measures the diagonals of the gap that exists between the point (u0-u1) * 0.5 and (v1-v0) * 0.5 with the point of intersection between the two diagonals of the panel. If the condition is not satisfied , for istance the user may set the values equal to the maximum arrow panel, the script continues to divide the surfaces into panels until the condition of tollerance is not satisfied.

Mesh relaxation: We can assume that each node in mesh is a mass point and that this mass has connections with springs to other nodes. If string length differs from original, node will be forced into movement. Angles between connection can be similarly constrained.

This is a simulation of a tensile structure using kangaroo component, with slider we can simulate the behavior of the mesh applying positive or negative forces on all vertices, except the constrain points.

TAC Technically Advanced Construction is a new postgraduate course for graduates and professionals established by the Department of Building Environment Science and Technology (BEST), Politecnico di Milano and Co-de-iT. It will run for three months and will allow participants to achieve high levels of knowledge in the design-to-production process through the use of advanced digital tools for design and machines for the creation of physical models.

The entire course, based at Politecnico di Milano, will take place through studies, workshops and working periods assisted (during the development, manufacture and test trial) by a team of highly skilled professionals and teachers (from studies and international schools like AA London, ARUP, Buro Happold, Zaha Hadid, Gehry Technologies, SPAN Architects ...).
The goal is to design, prototype, and finally test “multi-performative skins” through computational design software. Audits in progress performance of the “skin” will be the main feedback to optimize the final design.
At the end of the course, the best students will have the possibility to undertake a 3-6 months internship experience in some design offices proposed by the course commission and by the tutors.
The course will be completed by a series of public lectures held by the same course tutors and other professionals and teachers of international renown.
The course will start on April 04, 2011 and will end on July 09, 2011 (daily attendance).

Some Processing exercises done in September when I started to approach to this software.
They are very simple sketches, just for fun and to understand the grammar of javascript code. I'd to push forward my research with this software working trough some recursive script, agents and metaball. TBC...

Follow the circle //
A circle follows the mouse pointer and changes it size following the sin math formula. At the right side of the screen the circle draws a traces of the movement.

Bounce turbo //
A circle bounces fast into the canvas.

Matrix change color //
A matrix of circles that change colors following the mouse pointer.

Strange ellipse //
Curious effects from a code that draws a trace of the ellipse moved by mouse pointer. The ellipse changes color from white to black if mouse is pressed.

Continuous mode//
An ellipse moving from x=0 to x= widt canvas in a continous mode scaling itself trough a sin math formula.

Spot class//
Generation of rectangles that change position, dimension and color.

Point attractor//
A simulation of a point attractor into a matrix of circles.

It's hard to believe that anything useful in architecture can be conceived without connection: Architecure IS connection in all its forms. The main concept of this project comes from the idea that any kind of architecture requires its own specially designed joint and the creation of the connection is highly dependent on the type of material used – XX aluminium sheets, in this case.

The joint is formed by two parts that overlap, and potentially no screw should not be used to merge the two parties: two little wings can be manually bended into a rotating cross, thus creating a fixed component arrangement. The cross can be rotated and scaled following the size of the component and the general orientation of the overall system.

The component is derived from a lasercutted rhombus relieved of its internal parts and connected to another rhombus mirrored on its back. This union follows the whole scheme through iterative and repetitive means, by scaling the size and rotating the orientation of the “leaf” main axis.

The leaf pattern follows in plan the scheme of the phyllotaxis, and each wire is linked to the ground by a stainless steele plate laying on the ground and connected to the other adjacent plates.

This particular kind of process leads necessarily to the creation of repetitive modules into a reiterative scheme that changes from the small scale of the joint to the bigger scale of the overall scheme, leading to a deeper and substantial modification of the aesthetic and structural characteristics of the project.

First attemp to Processing.

I'm working on Processing in my free time, and I think it's a very powerful software. I heard about this software in the winter of 2006 when I visited the Interaction Design Institute of Ivrea (which now has closed, Italy, poor country). Stefano Mirti, who taught Processing in that school, showed and told us that soon it would become a famous software. Everyone know that Processing is an open source software created by Ben Fry and Casey Reas, but not everyone knows how fun and easy is to write code with it.

The potential of processing is handling a huge amount of geometry on the screen and interfacing with most of the computational software. This is a simple bouncing ball in the space limit of the screen, creating a ghost effect of itself, creating a very strong pattern. The circle while bounces changes its size according to a sinusoidal law, as if a button was pressed, like on-off, 0 and 1 values.

This Rhinoscript evaluates lenght of curves or lines and creates dimension using the rhino command "Dimension". The code needs improvements like external or internal dimension differentation and much more. I used this script on many panels unrolled from a parametric installation, in a few time I had all the panels dimensioned.

La proliferazione è una modalità di occupazione dello spazio. In dipendenza dal proprio modo di interazione ambientale, gli edifici possono essere distrubuiti e/o aggregati in modalità appropriate in modo da accumulare o disperdere gli effetti della loro interazione e il proprio impatto sull'evoluzione delle relazioni future. A livelli più bassi si può, ad esempio, considerare la distribuzione di componenti o caratteristiche lungo un involucro.

Approcci basati su unità funzionali operano una proliferazione basata sulla ripetizione indifferenziata e insensibile all'ambiente, risultando in una discretizzazione di matrice convenzionale e nella separazione tra edifici, edifici e contesto o spazi interni ed esterni; un diverso tipo di approccio, basato sulla condizione (termine usato nella sua doppia accezione di indicatore dinamico della tendenza di sviluppo dell'ecosistema e in quella causale – if a then b), introduce una forma di proliferazione che sfida e scioglie la dicotomia artificiale: molte piante crescono ovunque le condizioni portino ad esse beneficio, senza riguardo per limiti codificati nello spazio in cui si sviluppano. Le implicazioni sulla negoziazione dello spazio e sulla definizione di soglia sono notevoli; il sistema produce un campo armonicamente articolato e differenziato di fenotipi a partire dal genotipo attraverso un processo di "estetica delle forze" guidata attraverso lo strumento digitale.
